The Main Temples

There are around 300 temples in Siem Reap, but these three temples draw the most visitors, and for good reason each represents a different side of Khmer architecture at its peak.

Angkor Wat : best known for sunrise, with couples and small groups typically starting around 5:00 AM, while families more often visit around 8:00 AM instead. A full visit takes roughly 3 hours depending on pace.

Bayon (inside Angkor Thom) : Angkor Thom is the Khmer Empire’s walled former capital, and Bayon sits at its center. It’s known as the “smiling temple” for its many carved stone towers, each with unique faces looking out in every direction genuinely worth the visit both for the history and the photo opportunities.

Ta Prohm : the clearest example of architecture and nature merging: centuries-old tree roots have grown directly through the temple’s stonework, left semi-ruined rather than restored, giving it a distinctly jungle-tangled feel.

Sunset Spots

Phnom Krom: a quieter, less-crowded alternative to the more popular sunset viewpoints, with a romantic, uncrowded atmosphere. This temple is off the beaten path. I often bring my clients to visit to avoid crowds and enjoy the picnic on the hill. Sunset views are best from October to December.

Floating Villages on Tonlé Sap Lake

Kompong Phluk, on Tonlé Sap Lake, is a freshwater floating village generally worth visiting from July to March, with the best sunset views in the evening, particularly through November.

Entry is typically around $20 per person, and that fee goes toward supporting the local community.

Kompong Kleang is the best floating village for rural areas and has no tourist sites like Kompong Pluk or Chong Kneas. It is located around 50 km from the city. We can enjoy seeing the smoke fish, local village, stilt house, and floated forest.

Phnom Kulen

Worth visiting from July to March, with waterfall swimming as a highlight. Four spots are worth prioritizing:

• River of a Thousand Lingas
• Reclining Buddha
• Phnom Kulen Waterfall
• Mountain viewpoints

Note that vehicles aren’t permitted to descend the mountain until after 12:00 PM. The entrance ticket is $20 per person, cash only.

Cultural Experiences in Siem Reap

Cultural Apsara Dance

A traditional Khmer dance performance, best experienced in the evening paired with dinner particularly worthwhile for families. Popular venues in Siem Reap include Angkor Theater, Kunel, and Amazon, with dinner-and-show combinations typically running from 7:00 to 9:00 PM.

Handicraft Workshops

Senteurs d’Angkor and Artisans d’Angkor are the two workshops most worth visiting both demonstrate traditional local crafts like sugar and coconut oil production, with free entrance and the option to buy handmade souvenirs that directly support the local community.

Phare, The Cambodian Circus

blends acrobatics, music, and storytelling into an evening performance, a strong pick for families.

Visiting the Angkor National Museum before exploring the temples is worthwhile; its eight galleries provide valuable context for what you’ll see in the park.

Off-the-Beaten-Path Angkor Temples

This section is for travelers who want to avoid crowds while still experiencing historical significance.

Preah Ko is part of the Roluos group, located on the route to Bakong.

Banteay Srei the most detailed carving in the Angkor region, cut into pink sandstone.

Koh Ker the pyramid-form main temple of the former capital, Lingapura, with a distinctly different architectural style from the main Angkor circuit. Koh Ker is the temple where you should hire a well-known tour guide to provide you with a good understanding of the former capital city, Lingapura.

Beng Mealea a jungle ruin left largely unrestored, where the forest has genuinely reclaimed parts of the structure. It is highly recommended to combine this tour with a Rolous group, as I often do with my clients.
