This 10-day Cambodia itinerary combines Phnom Penh’s history and local life, Siem Reap’s temples, and four days of beach time on Koh Rong. It is a route I recommend for travelers who want to experience Cambodia’s major cultural highlights but also want enough time at the end of the trip to slow down and enjoy the islands.

I have built and guided this type of route with my clients, and the order works particularly well because the trip moves from city and history → temples → beach and relaxation.

The route is not designed to see every region of Cambodia. Instead, it gives each part of the trip a clear purpose: Phnom Penh for modern Cambodia and history, Siem Reap for Angkor and Khmer civilization, and Koh Rong for relaxation.

This is the day-by-day Siem Reap, Phnom Penh and Koh Rong itinerary I recommend based on my experience guiding clients through Cambodia.

Day 1: Arrive in Phnom Penh

Your private guide meets you at Techo International Airport and takes you to your hotel in Phnom Penh.

The airport transfer takes around 30 minutes depending on traffic. After checking in, the rest of the day is intentionally light.

If you arrive early enough, you can explore the Mekong riverfront, visit a local market or simply rest after your flight.

I normally keep the first day flexible because international arrival times vary and there is no reason to make the first day of a 10-day trip unnecessarily tiring.

Day 2: Phnom Penh Local Life, Silk Island & Markets

This day focuses on local life rather than only the major tourist sights.

The morning starts at Koh Dach (Silk Island), where you can see traditional silk weaving and village life outside the center of Phnom Penh.

After lunch, the route returns toward the city and continues to the SOSORO Museum, which explains Cambodia’s monetary and economic history. The day finishes around the Russian Market, where you can browse handicrafts, souvenirs and local products.

This is one of the Phnom Penh days I particularly like for clients who want to understand how people live beyond the city’s major monuments.

Day 3: Phnom Penh History & Architecture

The final Phnom Penh day focuses more heavily on the city’s history and architecture.The route can include:

• Central Market
• National Museum of Cambodia
• Royal Palace
• Wat Phnom
• Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum

The National Museum provides useful context for Khmer art and the Angkor period, while the Royal Palace shows a different side of Cambodia’s more recent history.

The day ends with Tuol Sleng, which is a much heavier experience. I normally explain the historical background carefully so travelers understand the site rather than simply visiting it as another attraction.

Day 4: Phnom Penh to Siem Reap

The journey from Phnom Penh to Siem Reap is by private vehicle, taking roughly five hours depending on traffic and stops.

Rather than treating the transfer as wasted travel time, I can arrange stops along the way depending on your interests and schedule.

One possible stop is Spider Market, where travelers can see a very different side of Cambodian roadside food culture. Arrive in Siem Reap in the afternoon and have time to check into your hotel and relax before the temple days.

Day 5: Sunrise at Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom & Ta Prohm

Early start to see sunrise at Angkor Wat, breakfast, then detailed visit of the temple.

The route then continues to Angkor Thom, including:

• Bayon
• Baphuon
• Terrace of the Elephants
• Terrace of the Leper King

The day finishes at Ta Prohm, famous for the trees and roots growing through the temple ruins. I recommend allowing enough time for this day rather than trying to combine too many distant temples with the main Angkor circuit.

Day 6: Beng Mealea, Roluos Group & Banteay Srei

Beng Mealea gives you a more atmospheric experience of a partially ruined jungle temple, away from the busiest Angkor sites.

The route then returns toward the Angkor region and can include the Roluos Group, including Bakong and Preah Ko. Depending on your interests and energy level, Banteay Srei can also be included, famous for its detailed pink sandstone carvings. This day is intentionally different from Day 5. Instead of repeating the main Angkor circuit, it introduces older, quieter and more remote temple experiences.

Day 7: Siem Reap to Koh Rong

Today changes the pace completely. After several days of cities, museums and temples, the route heads toward the Cambodian coast for the final part of the trip.

The journey requires a combination of private road transportation and a boat connection to Koh Rong. Because this is a longer transfer day, I recommend arranging the timing carefully in advance rather than trying to fit several sightseeing stops into the same day. Once you arrive on Koh Rong, the focus changes from sightseeing to relaxation.

Days 7–10: Koh Rong Beach & Island Time

The final part of the itinerary is intentionally less structured. After six days of traveling through Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, four days on Koh Rong gives you time to slow down. You can spend the days:

• Swimming
• Relaxing on the beach
• Exploring different beaches
• Taking an island boat trip
• Enjoying sunset
• Simply resting at your hotel

I don’t recommend filling every island day with activities. The purpose of adding Koh Rong to this itinerary is to give you a genuine break after the cultural and temple-heavy first part of the trip.

Why This Route Works

The main advantage of this itinerary is its clear change of pace. The first three days introduce you to Phnom Penh’s local life, architecture and modern history. The next three days move into Siem Reap and the Angkor region, where the focus shifts to Khmer civilization and temples.

The final four days on Koh Rong are deliberately different: no museum schedule, no early temple starts and no long sightseeing days. This makes the route particularly suitable for travelers who want to experience Cambodia’s culture but don’t want a 10-day trip consisting entirely of sightseeing.

My experience with clients has shown me that this city → temple → beach structure works especially well for first-time visitors who want both cultural experiences and downtime.
