It’s built for travelers whose main interest is the temples themselves: not just Angkor Wat, but the remote, lesser-visited ruins most itineraries never reach.

This 7-day route is based on my experience guiding private travelers in Siem Reap and is designed for visitors who want to explore Angkor beyond the main temples.

At a Glance 7 Day Siem Reap Angkor

This is highlight day by day Siem Reap Angkor Itinerary that is recommended and built from my experience with clients.

Day 1: Arrival in Siem Reap

Pick up from the airport straight to your hotel, with air conditioning and a cold towel waiting in the car for the ride in. The rest of the day is open a good time to get recommendations on where to eat and what the coming week looks like.

Day 2: Phnom Kulen Birthplace of the Khmer Empire

Phnom Kulen is where Angkorian civilization began, and this day explains why so many temples were built where they were geography, religion, and politics all played a part. The mountain holds the River of a Thousand Lingas, a large reclining Buddha, and a waterfall, with a lunch break before heading back to the hotel by mid-afternoon. The evening includes the Phare Cambodian Circus, a live storytelling performance combining acrobatics, music, and theater.

Day 3: Beng Mealea & Koh Ker

An 8:00 AM start heads to Beng Mealea, a jungle-swallowed temple left largely unrestored — trees growing through the stonework, minimal crowds. From there, the Koh Ker complex, once the capital of the Khmer Empire, centers on five main temples including Prasat Thom and Prasat Neak Kmao, known for their pyramid form and dense linga carvings. Lunch is taken near the temple before the return to Siem Reap.

Day 4: The Grand Circuit

A day built for travelers who want fewer crowds and more atmosphere. Preah Khan around 85 towers and a maze of corridors takes roughly two hours to explore. Neak Pean, known as the Island Temple, sits in the middle of a lake and is reached by a floating bridge. East Mebon offers a quiet, uncrowded photo stop, followed by Pre Rup, a pyramid-style temple. The day closes with sunset at Phnom Bakheng.

Day 5: Roluos Group & Banteay Srei

The Roluos Group Bakong, Preah Ko, and Lolei represents the earliest surviving Angkor-era temples, with Preah Ko dating to the late 9th century. A stop at a floating village and lunch precede the afternoon’s highlight: Banteay Srei, celebrated for the finest, most detailed pink sandstone carving in the Angkor region.

Day 6: Angkor Wat Sunrise, Bayon & Ta Prohm

The core Angkor day, starting at 5:00 AM with a breakfast box for sunrise at Angkor Wat. After breakfast near the temple, the tour covers the first floor’s Hindu-mythology bas-reliefs and the royal military procession carvings, continuing up to the second and top levels note that the top floor closes on Buddhist holy days, so it’s worth checking the calendar in advance. Seeing Angkor Wat properly takes about three hours. The day continues to Bayon and Angkor Thom, then closes at Ta Prohm, the temple best known for trees growing through its stonework.

Day 7: Departure

A free morning before transfer to the airport.

Who Is This 7-Day Siem Reap Itinerary For?

This route is best for travelers who:

• want to spend a full week exploring Angkor and its surrounding sites;
• have already decided that temples and Khmer history are their main priority;
• prefer staying in one hotel rather than changing cities;
• want to visit lesser-known sites such as Koh Ker and Beng Mealea;
• prefer a slower, deeper itinerary rather than a quick Cambodia highlights tour.

It is less suitable for travelers who want to combine Siem Reap with Phnom Penh, Battambang or Cambodia’s southern coast.

Why This 7-Day Siem Reap Itinerary Works

Most 7-day Cambodia itineraries divide the week between Siem Reap and another destination such as Phnom Penh or Battambang. This route makes a different choice: all seven days are based in Siem Reap, allowing enough time to explore both the famous Angkor temples and the lesser-visited sites farther from the main circuit.

The route starts with Phnom Kulen, then moves to Beng Mealea and Koh Ker before exploring the Grand Circuit and Roluos Group. Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom and Ta Prohm come later in the itinerary, after you have already built an understanding of the wider Angkorian landscape.

Choose this route if Angkor and Khmer history are your main priorities. Choose the Siem Reap & Phnom Penh route if you want Cambodia’s capital and modern history, or the Siem Reap & Battambang route if you want more rural culture and countryside.
