12-Day Cambodia Itinerary: Temples, Cities & Kratie

The twelve-day itinerary is based on my real experience working with clients, allowing them to explore Cambodia’s major regions without any rushed stopovers, including Angkor’s temples, Battambang’s countryside, Phnom Penh’s history, and a trip north to Kratie to see the Mekong’s river dolphins.

Route: Siem Reap Battambang Phnom Penh Kratie Phnom Penh

Highlights: Angkor Wat, Banteay Srei, Tonlé Sap, the Bamboo Train, Phnom Penh’s historic sites, and Irrawaddy dolphins.

At a Glance

Days 1–3: Siem Reap & Angkor

The trip opens in Siem Reap with a welcome city tour through the night market and Bar Street, and a traditional Khmer outfit as a first-day keepsake. Day 2 is the core Angkor day  sunrise at Angkor Wat, followed by Angkor Thom, including the carved faces of Bayon, the Baphuon, the Terrace of the Elephants, and the Terrace of the Leper King.

Day 3 shifts to the temples known for craftsmanship rather than scale: Banteay Srei, celebrated for its pink sandstone carving, and Banteay Samre, before a boat ride on Tonlé Sap Lake to see floating village life firsthand.

Day 4: Battambang & the Bamboo Train

After checking out of Siem Reap, the day’s centerpiece is a ride on Battambang’s Bamboo Train  a converted rail cart running on uneven French-colonial-era tracks through the countryside. The afternoon adds Phnom Banon, a temple perched 400 meters up, and sunset at Phnom Sampov, where thousands of bats stream from the cave at dusk. Overnight in Battambang.

Days 5 to 6: Phnom Penh

Day 5 covers the capital’s cultural landmarks by cyclo: the National Museum of Khmer Arts, the Royal Palace and Silver Pagoda, Riverside Park, and Wat Phnom. Day 6 turns to more difficult history at the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and Choeung Ek Killing Fields, balanced with an afternoon covering the Independence Monument and Central Market, and closing with a sunset cruise along the Mekong River.

Day 7: Phnom Penh to Kratie

The drive north breaks up with two stops: Han Chey, a riverside temple site overlooking the Mekong, and the seasonal Koh Pen bamboo bridge, rebuilt by hand every dry season. Arrival in Kratie is around 4:00 PM, with the evening left free to settle in before the next day’s main event. Overnight in Kratie.

Day 8: Kratie Irrawaddy River Dolphins

A two-hour boat trip on the Mekong offers the chance to see critically endangered Irrawaddy river dolphins in the wild, swimming both individually and in groups  one of only a handful of places left on earth where this is still possible.

Day 9: Kratie  Phnom Sombok & Wat 100 Columns

A day spent within Kratie province rather than moving on from it. Phnom Sombok, about 10 kilometers north of Kratie town, is the province’s main cultural hilltop  300-step climb past rows of monk statues leads to a stupa with panoramic Mekong views. Wat 100 Columns, in Sambor district roughly 35 kilometers further north, is a quieter, less-visited temple stop for anyone not yet templed-out after Angkor.

Day 10: Kratie to Phnom Penh

The return drive south crosses the Mekong at Stung Trong, a small riverside ferry village roughly a third of the way to Phnom Penh  a scenic, low-key stop to break up the drive rather than a destination in itself.

Day 11: Phnom Penh Free Day

A day left open to rest, revisit a favorite spot from earlier in the trip, or add an optional half-day activity before departure.

Day 12: Departure

Transfer to Phnom Penh International Airport for the flight home.

Why This Route Works

Most 12-day Cambodia itineraries either stay entirely on the standard temple-and-city circuit or add a beach ending. This one does neither it swaps the usual coastal finish for a run into the Mekong’s river towns, giving the second half of the trip a genuinely different character from the first without requiring the full highland stretch of a 14-day trip.
