How many days in Phnom Penh? From my experience as a guide to private travelers, 2 days is the best compromise for most first-time visitors.

A short stopover is possible in one day, but 3 days are better for travelers who want to explore the history, architecture, museums and local life of Phnom Penh at a slower pace. Below are three Phnom Penh itineraries for 1, 2 and 3 days, each designed for a different type of visit.

3 Ways to Spend Time in Phnom Penh

The day-by-day routes below are based on my experience guiding private clients in Phnom Penh. Of the three options, I find that two days gives most travelers the best balance.

My Recommendation: How Many Days in Phnom Penh?

For most of my private clients, I recommend 2 days. One day can cover the main highlights, but the schedule becomes quite full. Two days gives travelers enough time to see the important historical and cultural sites while still fitting Phnom Penh naturally into a longer Cambodia trip. I recommend 3 days when Phnom Penh’s history and local life are a major reason for the visit. I recommend 1 day mainly when Phnom Penh is a stopover before continuing to another destination.

1-Day Phnom Penh Itinerary

This route is based on the shorter Phnom Penh visits I regularly guide for travelers who arrive in the capital before continuing elsewhere in Cambodia.

Airport pickup leads straight into a condensed tour of the essentials: The Royal Palace, the National Museum, Wat Phnom, and a local market, all covered in one day. Royal Palace → National Museum → Wat Phnom → Central Market

2-Day Phnom Penh Itinerary

For first-timers who want to see Phnom Penh’s highlights before continuing on to Kampot and Kep.

Day 1: Phnom Penh Arrival

If we have time before check in hotel, we can explore Royal Palace, National Mususem, and Mekong Riverside

Day 2: City Tour Full Day

Koh Dach (Silk Island) → SOSORO Museum → Russian Market → Sunset

Explore Koh Dach to how to make silk and then continue to see SOSORO Museum. After riverside lunch, visit hilltop Wat Phnom and explore local market and then return back hotel for rest . We will meet at Mekong for sunset at 5 pm in the evening

3-Day Phnom Penh Itinerary

Three days is the best choice if Phnom Penh itself is an important part of your Cambodia trip. The additional time allows you to explore the capital’s historical sites,Royal Palace, National Museum, Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, architecture, markets ,local life, and Suset Mekong River without packing everything into one sightseeing day.

Day 1: Royal Phnom Penh

We will pikc up from the aiport for check in hotel and the evenging at 5:00 Pm , we will pick up for Sunset and dinner.

Day 2: Local Life & Silk Island

Silk Island(Koh Dach) → SOSORO Museum → Russian Market → local neighborhood/market

Explore Koh Dach (Silk Island), where silk weaving is still done by hand in village workshops, continues to the SOSORO Museum for Cambodia’s economic and monetary history and closes at the Russian Market, known for handicrafts, souvenirs, and local goods.

Day 3: Recent History & Flexible Phnom Penh

Royal Palce →National Museum → local markets →Tuol Sleng

Royal Phnom Penh & Recent History: The final day covers the city’s colonial and Khmer architecture on the way to Central Market (Psar Thom).

The National Museum of Cambodia holds centuries of Khmer art and Angkor-era sculpture, followed by Wat Phnom, the city’s symbolic spiritual center. The day closes at the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum

Which Length Fits You?

1 day: Phnom Penh is a layover or short stop before destinations.
2 days: first-time visitors who want the major sights before continuing some places.
3 days: Phnom Penh’s history, architecture and local life.

My recommendation: choose 2 days for most first-time visitors.
