14 Day Cambodia Off The Beaten Path Itinerary

This 14-day off-the-beaten-path Cambodia itinerary explores the country’s Mekong river towns and eastern highlands before finishing with Angkor and Phnom Penh.

The first eight days focus on Kratie, Ratanakiri, Mondulkiri and remote temple sites, while the final six days cover Siem Reap, Angkor and Phnom Penh.

This route is designed for travelers who want to experience a less-visited side of Cambodia: Mekong river life, Irrawaddy dolphins, crater lakes, waterfalls, indigenous communities, highland landscapes and remote temples, rather than spending the entire trip on the standard Siem Reap–Phnom Penh circuit.

In short: Days 1–8 explore Cambodia’s Mekong and eastern regions, while Days 9–14 return to the country’s major cultural highlights in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh.

 Days 1–3: The Mekong & River Wildlife

The first three days introduce Cambodia’s Mekong region before the route heads into the eastern provinces.

Day 1: Phnom Penh

Begin in Phnom Penh with the Royal Palace, National Museum and Silk Island (Koh Dach). This provides an introduction to Cambodia’s capital before leaving the main tourist circuit.

Day 2: Phnom Penh to Kratie

Travel north toward Kratie, with the Mekong providing a completely different landscape from Phnom Penh.

After arriving, cross to Koh Trong, a quieter Mekong island where you can experience rural river life by bicycle or local transport.

Day 3: Kratie to Ratanakiri

The morning focuses on the Kampi River Pool, where a boat trip offers the opportunity to see Irrawaddy river dolphins in the wild.

Afterward, continue overland to Banlung, the gateway to Ratanakiri province.

Days 4–7: Ratanakiri – Mondulkiri

The next four days focus on Cambodia’s eastern highlands, with volcanic landscapes, waterfalls, forests, local communities and outdoor experiences.

Day 4: Ratanakiri

Visit Yeak Laom, a volcanic crater lake surrounded by forest, followed by Kachanh and Katieng waterfalls.

The day can also include visits to local communities and traditional handicraft activities.

Day 5: Ratanakiri to Mondulkiri

Travel south toward Sen Monorom, the main town of Mondulkiri.

The journey introduces Cambodia’s highland scenery, with opportunities to stop at viewpoints and sample locally grown Mondulkiri coffee.

Day 6: Ethical Elephant Experience

Spend the day at an ethical elephant sanctuary where the focus is on observing and walking alongside rescued elephants rather than riding them.

The experience also provides an opportunity to learn about the Bunong community and its relationship with elephants.

Day 8: Koh Ker & Beng Mealea

Day 8 connects Cambodia’s eastern highlands with Siem Reap through two important but less-visited temple sites: Koh Ker and Beng Mealea. Koh Ker is known for its enormous stepped pyramid, while Beng Mealea is a sprawling jungle temple outside the main Angkor complex. The day provides a transition from remote Cambodia into the Angkor portion of the itinerary.

Days 9–11: Angkor & Siem Reap

• After eight days away from the main tourist circuit, the itinerary reaches Siem Reap for three days around Angkor.
• Day 9 covers Angkor Wat, Angkor Thom, Bayon and Ta Prohm.
•  Day 10 combines Banteay Srei and Phnom Kulen with Tonlé Sap
• while Day 11 focuses on local crafts, countryside villages and Phare Cambodian Circus.

Days 12–14: Return to the Capital

The drive back to Phnom Penh (or a 45-minute domestic flight, if preferred) includes a stop at Sambor Prei Kuk, a UNESCO-listed pre-Angkorian temple site in the forest, plus the Spider Market and Naga Bridge. Day 13 is left open in Phnom Penh before the Day 14 transfer to the airport for departure.

Why This Route Works

This route is designed around contrast. Instead of beginning with Angkor Wat, it starts in Phnom Penh and then moves into the Mekong region and eastern highlands, where travelers encounter river dolphins, crater lakes, waterfalls, highland landscapes and remote temples.

Angkor arrives on Day 9, giving the second half of the trip a very different character from the first. The route then finishes in Siem Reap and Phnom Penh, so travelers still experience Cambodia’s major cultural highlights without spending the entire two weeks on the standard tourist circuit.

Choose this itinerary if exploring less-visited Cambodia is more important to you than beaches or maximizing time around Angkor.
