Day 1: The Main Temples

The day opens with sunrise at Angkor Wat, one of the most photographed sights in the world, followed by Angkor Thom through its impressive South Gate and Bayon, known for its 216 carved stone faces. Baphuon, a temple-mountain with panoramic views from its upper terraces, precedes the day’s final stop at Ta Prohm, where giant tree roots have grown directly into the ancient stonework.

Day 2: Koh Ker & Beng Mealea

A day into the Khmer Empire’s more remote territory. Beng Mealea is a jungle-covered ruin left largely unrestored, offering a genuine sense of discovery rather than a maintained tourist site. The route continues to Koh Ker, briefly the empire’s capital, where several distinct temples stand out: Prasat Pram, known for trees growing directly over its towers; Neang Khmau; Prasat Linga; and the pyramid-form Prasat Thom, with panoramic views from its summit.

Day 3: The Pink Temple & Distant Ruins

Banteay Srei, celebrated for the finest, most intricate pink sandstone carving in the Angkor region, opens the day. From there, the route continues to Kbal Spean, reached by a short trek through forest  a riverbed carved with over a thousand lingas, considered the source of the river that flows down from Phnom Kulen toward the city. The combination of a short hike and the carvings themselves makes this one of the more physically engaging stops on the route.

Day 4: Phnom Kulen  Waterfall & the River of a Thousand Lingas

Phnom Kulen National Park, considered the birthplace of the Khmer Empire, anchors the day: a waterfall for swimming, the River of a Thousand Lingas, and a natural cliff viewpoint over the surrounding forest. Lunch is taken at a local restaurant or a scenic spot near the falls, with return to the hotel by early evening a day built as much around nature as history.

Day 5: Roluos Group & Floating Communities

The final day covers some of the earliest surviving Angkor-period architecture: Bakong, the first large temple-mountain built by the Khmer Empire; Preah Ko, known for its detailed carving; and Lolei, originally constructed on an island within a reservoir. After lunch, a private boat trip through Kompong Kleang  recommended over Chong Kneas or Mechrey for its more authentic, less-touristed stilt houses and flooded forest  closes out the trip with a genuine look at Tonlé Sap life.
